The Tug Hill has many public
fishing streams. The East
Branch is only one of many fine trout fishing streams.
Dropping at more than 50 feet per mile the East branch is
a class 3 river as defined by white-water enthusiasts.
The river is characterized by swift rapids interspersed
with deep pools. From the Lewis county line to the
village of Taberg, the East Branch flows through a gorge
with limited access. The river is stocked annually by the Department of Environmental Science (DEC) with several thousand brown trout. The river has it own naturally spawned fish as well including rainbow trout and brook trout. The Fish Creek Atlantic Salmon Club annually stocks 40,000 Atlantic salmon fry. Historically, before the dams were built in the early 1800's on the Oneida and Oswego rivers, Atlantic salmon used to swim upstream from Lake Ontario to spawn in Fish Creek. Fish Creek has a good invertebrate base to support fish. It has hatches of caddis flies, may flies and stone flies. Fly fishing is an effective way to fish the river. For those new to fly fishing, rigging a fly rod is relatively easy. |
