Fly fishing is both an art and a science. There is something esthetic about it. The rhythm of the cast and the delicacy of a fly dropping silently on the water is a beautiful thing in itself. The fisherman, slowly stalking his prey armed with knowledge and science, against the wily trout, armed with instinct and uncanny senses, is high drama carried out in a beautiful setting.

There are many different stratedies a person can take towards fly fishing. There is the Generalist way for one. The generalists maintains that the fly is not important and that the only thing required to be able to catch fish is to be able to place a fly in the right spot at the right time and to fish it in a way that the trout would not suspect that it is anything other than something to eat. The generalist carries only a few favorite flies which he fishes skillfully.

The Impericalist insists that the fly is the only thing needed to be successful. The impericalist carries many, many flies and he fishes a few streams all the time. He goes through a trial and error process until he finds the right fly under the right conditions at the right time. The impericalist must fish a river throughout the year because the conditions change and the available insects change as time goes on.

The Scientific angler first studies the river to determine what insects are available and then chooses the appropiate fly. If a hatch is going on he will catch a few flies and to match the fly to the insect. He needs not to be a etymologist nor does he need to be able to name the insect. All he needs is to be able to match the size and color of the insect to a fly. If there is no hatch he will examine the substrate to determine what nymphs are present.

Each of the strategies have their points to make and each are equally valid. Whichever stategy a person takes, flyfishing still remains as the mystery it is, which accounts for its attraction to a wide range of people.

Fish Creek Lodge has made fly fishing and fly casting lessons available at $30 per person per hour.
