The East Branch of Fish Creek is one of the most spectacular and unknown streams in the state. From the moment you put in, you are on the fabled "River on No Return". Because of cliffs on either side, there are few points of egress. From the Lewis county line to the village of Taberg, the East Branch flows through a gorge cut 90 feet deep into the shale by the action of glacial melt-water.

A trip down the river, especially during high water in the Spring, is an exhilarating experience and should not be attempted by novice canoeists. You should have plenty of skill, good equipment and an experienced team. Dropping at more than 50 feet per mile on the upper sections, the East branch is a class 3 river. With the many waterfalls from spring flows coming over the sides of the gorge give this river a mystical character.

The points of egress are where Point Rock Creek comes in on the left, Rome Reservoir, Palmer Road bridge and Taberg.

In addition to the white water of Fish Creek there is a fine flat water lake within a few miles of the lodge. The lake was formed by the dam on Fish Creek built to supply water to the city of Rome. The lake is pristine with no development on its shores.
